Artist of The Month - November 2023
Mannequin Pussy, the Philadelphia-based indie-punk band, has been making waves in the music scene with their unique blend of snarling riffs, vulnerable lyrics, and aching shoegaze melodies. From their humble beginnings as a scrappy two-piece project to their current status as a critically acclaimed band, Mannequin Pussy has captivated audiences with their energetic live performances and raw, emotional songwriting.
Mannequin Pussy was initially formed in 2010 by childhood friends Marisa "Missy" Dabice and Athanasios Paul in Connecticut. The duo released two EPs, "Meatslave" and "Bonerjamz!" in 2011, showcasing their penchant for playful and energetic punk rock. After relocating to Philadelphia, the band released their self-titled debut album in 2014, a blistering 18-minute explosion of hardcore joy that established them as a force to be reckoned with in the punk scene.
In 2015 and 2016, respectively, Kaleen Reading and Colins "Bear" Regisford joined the Mannequin Pussy lineup, bringing new energy and dynamics to the band's sound. It was during this period that they cut their teeth on the touring circuit and released their sophomore album, "Romantic," in 2016. The album received rave reviews from Rolling Stone, with its balance of taut fury and bitter reminiscence earning them well-deserved recognition.
Mannequin Pussy's first release through Epitaph Records was "Patience," their third studio album, released in 2019. The album showcased the band's melodic sensibilities without compromising their raw intensity, exploring themes of emotional revelations and personal growth. "Patience" received widespread critical acclaim and was hailed as one of the best albums of the year by Pitchfork, solidifying Mannequin Pussy's position as a rising force in the punk rock landscape.
As the COVID-19 pandemic brought live music to a halt in 2020, Mannequin Pussy found themselves navigating a new reality of social isolation and internet-fueled anxiety. In March, it was announced that Paul had left, and the band would continue as a three-piece. Despite the challenges, the band managed to come together and release their "Perfect" EP, which served as a cathartic expression of their experiences during the pandemic. The EP's furious and incandescent songs captured the frustration, loneliness, and resentment of a year spent locked away, resonating with listeners who were also grappling with similar emotions.
Building on the success of their previous releases, Mannequin Pussy announced their upcoming album, "I Got Heaven," set to be released on March 1 via Epitaph Records. The album, produced by John Congleton, promises to showcase the band's evolution while staying true to their punk roots. Guitarist Maxine Steen also became a full member. With the release of the album's title track and a music video that continues the storyline from their previous visual, Mannequin Pussy offers a glimpse into the sonic and visual world they have created for their fans.
