For Fans Of: Teenage Fanclub, The Tragically Hip
As the festive season is almost here, we thought it’s only fair to treat your ears and playlists to the sweet sounds of Canadian legends, Sloan. The Indie-rock meets pop Toronto-based band just dropped their latest album, Steady, and we have not stopped spinning it here at Alt Rock Radio!
Who
Sloan are a four-piece Canadian rock band, originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, but now based in Toronto. The band consists of Chris Murphy (bass, vocals), Patrick Pentland (guitar, vocals), Andrew Scott (drums) and Jay Ferguson (guitar, vocals). They debuted as a band back in 1991, and within a few months their feedback-laden live shows started to draw a sizable audience in.
Since forming back in the 90s, the Juno-nominated band have written and produced thirteen killer full-length albums, a rarity and achievement that most bands could only dream of reaching. The band is also amongst one of the best-selling bands to derive from Canada in the last 2 decades and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The Brand New Album
The guys dropped their latest record Steady in October, just after the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Smeared. The 12-track album was written and recorded across the past two years, with the added trials and tribulations of COVID-19 and lockdowns. Nevertheless, the album reaffirms their capability of nailing sunny pop rock with smart and funny lyrics.
The album title was inspired by and reflective of the band’s impressive 30 years together, bassist and vocalist Chris Murphy explains, “they say if you want to go fast go alone but if you want to go far go together. I don’t know if there are many other bands you can name that are still making records with their original line up 30 years in.”
